Each year, ONCOLOGY's sister journal, PHYSICIANS PRACTICE, surveys hundreds of physicians across all specialties regarding their compensation. This year, more than 1,300 physicians were surveyed. Data culled from the oncologists' responses are presented here. As the following graphs show, the results varied widely.
The vast majority of oncologists work more than 40 hours a week, with 38.2% reporting an average work week of over 60 hours.
Nearly half of all oncologists surveyed (44.2%) reported that their income dropped in 2012.
More than half of practices reported higher overhead costs as compared to the previous year.
One-third of practice owners or partners reported taking on extra work outside of their practice to boost revenue.
Up from 7.4% last year, 19.4% of practices reported that they may have to close their doors in the next 1 to 3 years.
Up from last year, 44.7% of oncologists reported that they are too busy.
